What Is TMS Therapy?

TMS therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate key areas of the brain. TMS therapy has been FDA-approved for the treatment of depression, and it is also being studied for its potential to treat other mental health conditions like anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Magnetic field pulses and electrical currents stimulate nerve cells in the prefrontal cortex, which essentially wakes up the dormant nerve cells and balanced the brain’s firing functions. This procedure has proven to effectively treat clients when other attempts at medical intervention have failed.

TMS has been widely used for over thirty years and is approved with the specific intention of treating depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders. TMS therapy is not an instantaneous treatment. It causes gradual changes in the brain over time and must be given on an ongoing basis. It is usually applied for thirty minutes at a time, five days a week, for six to eight weeks. Due to the need for this prolonged exposure, this therapy is sometimes referred to as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, or rTMS.

During a typical TMS therapy session, the client will sit in a comfortable chair and a TMS device will be placed against their head. The TMS device uses magnetic fields to stimulate the brain, and most people report feeling a tapping sensation on their head during the treatment.

How We Use TMS Therapy

TMS therapy is part of an approach to treatment that also counseling and holistic interventions. This approach to treatment is based on the belief that mental health is a complex issue, and that no one treatment modality is right for everyone. Instead, a team of experts creates an individualized treatment plan for every client that includes TMS therapy as just one part of their journey to recovery. As they learn healthy coping skills while talking with a counselor one-on-one or in a group setting, TMS therapy can supplement their progress.

TMS therapy is:

  • Non-invasive – TMS therapy is a non-invasive treatment that doesn’t require any anesthesia or sedation.
  • Effective – TMS therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for depression, and it is also being studied for its potential to treat other mental health conditions.
  • Safe – TMS therapy is a safe and well-tolerated treatment, and there are no serious side effects associated with the treatment.
